(Aging in dogs)
If your dog is approaching its geriatric years, start paying close attention to his behavior, habits and other signs of possible declining health. Although many owners recognize problems associated with old age in their dogs, most do not bring them to the attention of the family veterinarian. By asking pertinent questions during geriatric health exams and providing the necessary assistance, veterinarians can help in strengthen the bond between the owner and pet.
During this condition owner need to take better preventive care, medical care and most provide premium nutrition for geriatric dogs. We know that longevity is in part determined by genetic influences. Environmental influences also play a roll. Medical care, nutrition, housing and stress are other important factors influencing longevity. Physical insults such as trauma, infection and toxins can all have a deleterious effect on lifespan.
Physical changes in geriatric dogs
There are some physical changes take place in older dog. During this stage of older dog, aging process effect almost all organ like,
- Loss in weight
- Body water will decrease
- Decrease in number of nephrons and perfusion
- Arthritis and other joint problems
- Humoral immunity and cell mediated systems are very less effective
- Decrease the concentrating ability of dog
- Problem in oral cavity like gum recession, loss of teeth occur
- Problem in respiratory efficiency with decrease in cerebral blood vessel
In most geriatric dogs they are some changes in the senses.
Behavioral changes in geriatric dogs
- Less active and feel always restlessness.
- Stool housesoiling like constipation, Increase in waking .
- Many aggression behavior will take place.
- Decrease in tolerance of excess heat or cold.
- Hypersensitive to stimuli with less affected senses.
There are name of diseases related to the older dogs
- Heart disease like fainting .
- Shortness of breath.
- Coughing.
- Water consumption will increase.
- Dental problem.
- Changes in muscle tone.
- Changes in coat and skin.
How to handle older dogs
Some tips which will help you to keep your older dogs in best condition and provide good quality of life to them.

Provide them a thick and soft surface to sleep on.

Due to older age their skin become dry so try to brush their hair and try to do oiling with natural oil, before doing this take advice of a oil name from vet.

At this stage dog are less resistance to infection, so try to keep away them from fleas and ticks.

Consult with veterinarian and take some advice which is related about dogs general health and about their digestive upset.
